Somehow my sleep contained  a number of arguments regarding natural selection, evolution, and the Nietzschean superman. As well as the actual Superman. My dream theory concluded like this: if cooperation is seen as equally strategic  to competition in an evolutionary sense, then the superman is not as important as he might like to think he is, since many of the most successful organisms are cooperative in nature. As witness ants, or in our own case the relationships amongst humans or with our pets and herd animals. So he can be uber, but the qualities he boasts are not as valuable to the survival of the species as our ability to combine variations of characteristics through cooperation.

Unless we're talking about the actual Superman, in which case he has, of course, saved the human species many times and is capable of defying evolution with impunity. (As note his having a baby with Lex Luthor.)

I apparently woke the SO to tell him about this, though I plead sleep deprivation and being still mostly asleep.

Can you tell I've been spending too much time reading Smallville stories?

This time around I'm crushing on Clark.

It's because I'm not actually watching the show. I watched the first two seasons, and then just went away in horror, though I hated to abandon Lex. I don't like to discuss Smallville, for fear that I'll be expected to like Lana or be called anti-feminist (shudder), but I do love the premise. I would pay so much money to see that show done with the subtext as text. I knew that if I kept watching, bad things would happen to Chloe, who I loved, and Lex, who I also loved, and I'd be beaten about the head and shoulders with Lana, who is very pretty and would make a nice toothpaste model, and that in the end, the villains would continue to be anyone I might be able to relate to in any way. So I did the smart thing and quit while I was ahead.

Several times now I have been deeply tempted to watch again, but I have been strong!

I hear Jensen was in one of those seasons, though. Somebody save me.
