Hey, I'm back.
I miss lj so much when I'm away. Everyone on my list has so much of interest to share, lately, and I like to keep up.
In an earlier post, I rambled for a bit about House. I really had no idea that so many other folks were into it. I was watching because a) a friend gave me a free episode 1 DVD and b) I adore Hugh from Black Adder/J&W/etc. So I've been interested enough in it to watch it with both positive and negative criticism, but unaware folks around me were falling in love. Since I didn't know I wasn't watching in something of a void, I didn't spell out what I meant very clearly. It would take me a while to do so, as I have been watching quite analytically, for the most part. Maybe I should? Or not. Or, to keep it short, I'll make a list.
1. Hugh's acting is brilliant. The actors playing Foreman and Cuddy are quite good. A number of the actors in guest roles have been truly awful, and others excellent. More bad than good, but some exceptional roles help keep me interested.
2. Sherlock Holmes is one of my favorite series, both lit. and televised. Especially Jeremy Brett. I love the concept of solving medical mysteries through detailed analytical observation, and I love the archetype of the difficult detective. Extra points for an adoring male best friend and helpmeet.
3. The writing is uneven, in both dialogue and plotting. Sometimes the lines are clever, and sometimes they aren't cleverly written but the better actors on the show bring life to them and make them sound good. Sometimes they are so bad they make me groan. Sometimes the plots seem to me to be really unlikely, and sometimes believable.
4. House often engages in behavior I find seriously repugnant, and the show as a whole seems to support his opinions. Not always, or in everything, but often. Some of the characters squick me massively. I cannot deal with Cameron's defensiveness about House, after the unprofessional treatment she received from him. Ew.
5. The slash is ubiquitous, which makes me happy.
6. Reality, as postulated by the show, clashes with my understanding of the world a LOT. Like, in what hospital would a doctor allow a patient's parent/girlfriend/whatever to lean over the patient with whom he is engaged, yelling at him during desperate revival attempts? How is it possible that House hasn't been driven to bankruptcy and/or arrested by now? Etc.
7. Sometimes the show really cracks me up, for instance when House leaves his ducklings thinking he's being difficult but brilliant, when he's really forgetful and faking it.
8. Watching Foreman and House fight makes me happy. More please!
9. Doctor Chase seems to be developing into an intriguing character, whose back story I am interested in learning.
10. The cleavage shots are both good and bad; good because they are so lacking in subtlety they are hilarious, plus some of the cleavage is pretty. Bad because they are so lacking in subtlety that they are hilarious, disrupting the story. Also, while I love Cuddy, the physical type the casting director goes for isn't mine, which isn't really "bad" but is sad for me.
Basically, it's your typical love/hate relationship.
My fannishness regarding House is of the Harry/Draco variety. Or maybe the L/Raito type, with me wanting to improve it by removing/adding writers, characters, and plotlines. Except that the show doesn't secretly want to shag me back.
Oh oh, ETA: In light of kerfuffling I've recently browsed, I feel moved to add this disclaimer.
This is my impression of the show. Nobody else is likely to see it exactly the same way. More than accepting, I love to read other takes on it. I'm critical and engaged and snarky about this show, so I'm going to be opinionated. I've already read a number of alternate reads and enjoyed them very much.
