I've FINALLY gotten to see PotC: AWE.
Yay!
Here are my spoilery thoughts on the subject:

The Obligatory post-PotC: AWE Obfuscations Post

I really enjoyed this one, far more than the second, but not so much as the first. Jack gave up his immortality for Will, which is just freaking awesome and actually convinces me that he always intended to redeem Will from Davy Jones in the second film. I needed that reassurance very much indeed. There were some things I thought could be better or were just tragic, of course, Norrington’s end being one of them. I am more than ever convinced that James and Elizabeth would have been dynamic and hot together. The second movie rather soured me on Elizabeth as well, but I’m fond of her again now.

That said, WTF was up with her not rescuing Will? She and Jack should have gotten him back by now. And how cool would it have been if she’d been the one to become Captain of the Flying Dutchman? Best of all would have been what I actually thought was going to happen; all three of them helped stab that heart, and I thought somehow all three of them would be bound to take Davy Jones’ place. Now THAT would be an awesome ending.

Still, the ending left us massive fodder for sequels and prequels and whatnot, not to mention a zillion fan stories and novel tie-ins etc., so that’s good.

Here’s what I’m wondering.

·        Jack’s seeking the fountain of youth at the end of AWE.

·        Elizabeth meets Will with a young boy, after ten years; she looks EXACTLY the same. They didn’t even try to age her a tiny bit.

·        We all assumed that the boy was Will’s son, right?

·        What if Jack found the fountain, because he intended to find Will, stab the heart, and quickly administer the fountain’s water to Will, simultaneously saving and freeing him?

·        What if Jack shared the water with Elizabeth?

·        What if Jack DRANK TOO MUCH? Elizabeth would know how much to drink because he did the testing, and so just kept to the same age. But.

·        What if that boy- is Jack?

Just some thoughts.

A few immediate reactions to the movie.

·        I just- I really love Will. He has done more growing as a character than anyone else except maybe Norrington. And he was pretty wonderful to start with. Note: I don’t love him because I think he’s beautiful or because he’s played by Orlando. It’s Will Turner that strikes me as a wonderful man and deeply sympathetic character. Calypso likes him too! But he sure does swashbuckle with style.

·        Elizabeth makes a great Pirate King. I love it so much that she actually became a pirate lord, because I think that is what is right for her. Either that or taking over a small country, whichever.

·        I like the fact that Jack *hasn’t* had much character development. He’s a standing myth. We do know for certain now that he is crazy, and those open sores on his chin have lasted two movies; I’m pretty sure he is syphilitic. It may well be that his drive for immortality is more urgent than one might think. Johnny Depp has given him so many details, proving himself once again not a good, but a great actor.

Why, Kraken, why? I loved you so, great Sea Beastie of Lore.
